Kushanku is said to be named after a Chinese Martial Artist (or Military Person) who arrived in Okinawa in the 1750s. There is a shipping document (created following a ship wreck) in which Kushanku, having done a demonstration at which the captain of the ship was present, is credited as a person of significant martial skill with both Wrestling and Striking. The Kata Kushanku has been passed down a long line of karate masters adopted into Wado Ryu by Otsuka Sensei on forming Wado Ryu in 1934.
