Pinan Shodan is usually the second Kata taught in the Wado Ryu syllabus after PInan Nidan. Pinan Shodan's name implies it is number one (Sho) but Nidan is believed to be easier for beginners to perform and so the order has been reversed. Pinan Shodan contains many essential movements from basic strikes to arm clearence and arm manipulations. The meaning of Pinan:- The word Pinan has more recently been translated as "Safe from Harm" rather than an older translation "peaceful mind." The original Pinan Series was develpoed by Anko Itosu in the 1890s and adopted into Wado Ryu by Otsuka Sensei on forming Wado Ryu in 1934.
